Innsbruck Story Walks

Guided story walks in and around Innsbruck in English (and when the weather is warm). It’s one of the most interesting ways to see more of Innsbruck on foot!

What are ?

A Story Walk is…

…storytelling performance that steps out of theatre and is instead a walk with short stops along the way to hear a story.  A story walk is a lovely way to get acquainted with the city of Innsbruck and surrounding areas on foot, whilst being entertained by Innsbruck’s only English-speaking oral storyteller.

Story walks are approximately 1.5 hours long and cost €10.  You can reserve your place online and pay online or pay on the day.

I offer a number of different story walks in and around Innsbruck, each of which takes a different route and incorporates different stories.  That means that you can choose a walk that interests you, or better yet, come along to more than one story walk.

Story Walks are:

  • Great value (€10 for adults, €6 for children 15 and under)
  • Entertaining
  • A fun way to enjoy the outdoors and stories at the same time
  • An unusual way to get to know the city of Innsbruck and surrounds on foot, without the standard tourist fare
  • Ecologically sensitive – no matter how small or large you think you are, you have a very light footprint when you’re walking in comparison to just about any other form of transport
  • Good for your health, combining fresh air, a little light exercise and some mental stimulation to boot
  • Social

Story Walks all take place in and around Innsbruck and are all in English at the moment.  We also offer private Story Walks for groups and themed events.

How Story Walks work

Going on a Story Walk is an uncomplicated affair.  Simply make a note of which walk you want to do, reserve your place online (so that I know to expect you), and show up promptly on the day of the walk to pay.

I will be waiting for you at the meeting point, holding copies of the distinctive Story Walks leaflet.

As we will be seeing Innsbruck on foot, you’ll want to wear appropriate footwear, perhaps bring a bottle of water, and check the weather to see what other accessories might be useful – a jacket if it’s cold, an umbrella if it looks like we might be a spot of rain, a sun hat and sunscreen if it’s warm etc.

I want to commission a custom Story Walk

Do you have a conference or brand promotion or event coming up?  Why not incorporate a custom-designed Story Walk or storytelling performance to bring your event or theme to life and give people a unique experience.

After a conversation about what you want to achieve, I can give you some ideas about how I can craft custom Story Walks and storytelling performances for you.

To arrange a no-obligation exploratory conversation, get in touch.

Where do I meet the Story Walk storyteller?

Different walks meet in different places, usually (but not always) near the Altstadt. Please check your Story Walk to see the designated meeting point.

Why choose Innsbruck Story Walks instead of a tour?

Story Walks are not historical or guided tours of Innsbruck. Instead, they are walks filled with stories from Tirol and further afield. If you can imagine taking a storytelling performance out of the theatre and into the streets, you’ll have an idea of what to expect!

If you’re tired of trying to digest the dates and names of important historical events and people, but you still want the opportunity to see Innsbruck on foot, or if you live in Innsbruck and simply want to do something a bit different (in English!), a Story Walk might be the perfect solution for you.

What should I wear?

Whatever you like, however walking shoes are advised as we’ll be afoot for at least 1.5 hours and we may encounter cobbled streets along the way! Take a quick look at the weather forecast before you set out and bring along accessories suitable to the weather – umbrella, coat, sun hat and so on.

Should I bring anything else?

A bottle of water might be an idea, especially if it’s hot.

What about cancellations?

We need at least 2 people to run a Story Walk. Story Walks are also partly weather dependent – if we have too few people for a walk, or if the weather is behaving badly (snow, heavy rain etc.), we’ll send out an email (and an SMS if we have your number) notifying you of the cancellation 24 hours in advance.

We’ll also post details about any cancellations on our website, so you may want to check our site before you head out!

How can I arrange a Story Walk for school or a group?

From groups of tourists to groups of school children, I am always happy to take groups on Story Walks in and around Innsbruck.

I can offer you a selection of current Story Walks to choose from, or we can create a Story Walk specifically for your group with stories tailored to the interests or age of the group.

“I went on my first Story Walk when Suzanne started testing the idea. I confess that I was dubious, but I loved it! It was literally a walk through interesting streets with regular stops for stories, some of which lasted 2-3 stops. The stories were all traditional tales – fairy and folk tales – and some were hilarious, whilst others really made me think. I wish every city had these! Great job, Suzanne!”
